Home Insurance offer for Christmas

Unfortunately for many of us at this time of year, it’s not just Santa who will be making an appearance in our homes, this is also one of the busiest times of the year for burglars.

Due to this, it’s important that you have a home insurance policy that is good enough to protect your home and belongings.

At this time of year, many of us spend a lot of money on family and friends and our homes are filled with our purchases so it’s imperative that you check that your home insurance policy covers all of your Christmas presents, according to the price comparison site; Moneysupermaket.com.

The money saving website has found that most UK insurers will increase home contents cover by up to ten per cent during the festive period.

However, it’s important that your check your own policy as the timeframe for these free top-ups vary greatly between many companies.
Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: “With so many variations between insurers on seasonal uplift, checking the small print with a fine-toothed comb is always a must – especially to safe guard from being underinsured.”

Earlier this year, the website also advised homeowners to check their home insurance policy covered any accidental breakages caused by guests over the festive period.
Another important point which is worth remembering is that you should check whether any high value single items need to be listed individually on your current policy. Insurers often impose limits of £1,000, for example, for expensive items such as jewellery and electronics. Pricey and popular accessories such as iPods may also need itemising so they are also covered away from the home.

As well as covering your items, it’s essential to try and stop unwittingly enticing thieves into your home. Make sure you keep Christmas presents hidden and out of sight until the big day. They may look pretty under the tree, but anything on display is an extra temptation for burglars.

Something else to remember for after Christmas is to make sure that you dispose of any packaging carefully – don’t put boxes outside as they show crooks what’s on offer inside. Instead, cut packaging up, turn it inside out and keep it indoors until the bin men come.

With all of this information everything should be safe and well on Christmas Day or at the very least covered.  However, if you do want to change your home insurance policy or just compare the others available to make sure you’re getting a good deal, then you can visit Moneysupermarket’s home insurance page here; http://www.moneysupermarket.com/home/

Home Renovation? Don’t Forget About the Bathroom

Your bathroom is just like any other room in your house. There are two types of homeowners; the first types are people who consider the bathroom as important as their bedrooms or their living room, and the other types are people who don’t’ care and just think bathrooms are only for—you know what. The second types usually spend a lot of money on their living rooms, bedrooms, study and even their porch, but if you look at their bathrooms, you’ll feel like throwing up. Plush interiors and great furniture make up the entire house except the bathrooms, which usually look messy and worn out. What these people don’t realize is that when the value of your bathrooms goes down, it brings down the resale value of your house, too!
Just because your bathrooms are not visible to anybody doesn’t mean that you can keep them dirty. Just because your private parts are not visible to others, do you keep them dirty and unwashed? It’s pretty much the same thing, although, the example used here might not make too much of a connection between your private parts and your bathrooms. The only difference here is that if your private parts get worn out, you can’t do much about it and you can’t buy new parts to replace the old ones; you can set right your bathrooms by remodeling them. Many homeowners have realized the need to remodel their bathrooms and have started including bathroom remodeling in their home renovation plans. Even simple things like new lighting, paint, wallpaper, curtains or shower enclosures

Talk to a good designer or discuss with your spouse, draw up a plan and decide on a budget. Buy bathroom accessories that fall within your budget because the market is flooded with so many tempting but costly accessories, you’ll end up overshooting your budget if you don’t have a firm mind. There are also many ways to cut costs like doing it yourself or by shopping for accessories when a sale is going on and so on. The most important part is not to have a bathroom that looks like a presidential suite in a 7 start hotel but a nice, aesthetically pleasing and an affordable one. Once you have your bathroom remodeled, you can look forward to many pleasant bathroom experiences in the future, and from then on, you’ll never dread going into your bathrooms or want to rush your job when you’re inside!

Improve Your Home and Lower Your Insurance Bill?

There’s an old marketing adage which says that you have to spend money in order to earn money. In a similar fashion, it’s also true that if you spend money to improve your home, you can save money on your home insurance bill. How can that be possible? The very same features and appliances that lead to lower home insurance quotes in new houses can be added to your existing home as well.

Here are a few examples of minor and not-so-minor home improvements that can help reduce your homeowners insurance premium.

  • HVAC: Your out-dated heating or air condition system may be costing you a significant amount of money. A newer heating system is less likely to overheat and cause a fire, and is likely to be more energy efficient as well. Newer air conditioners have better seals to protect coolant from leaking into your air supply, and are also more efficient. As well, modern heaters and air conditioners generally come with programmable thermostats, making it easier to set a specific temperature and stick to it, as well as to make sure the heat gets turned down at night, and the air conditioner isn’t cooling an empty home, but kicking on just soon enough to give you a comfortable atmosphere when you arrive. Not only will the safer systems reduce your insurance, you’ll likely save money on utility bills as well.
  • Smoke Alarms: Did you know smoke alarms are supposed to be replaced every ten years? If you have smoke alarms already, replace them; if you don’t – add them. They’re very inexpensive, and can save your life as well as saving you up to five percent on your insurance bill. Want to be even saver (and save a little more)? Add a carbon dioxide detector to the mix.
  • Home Security: A monitored burglar alarm system can net you a five percent discount on homeowners insurance, as can the installation of something as inexpensive as the common deadbolt lock. Another way to save money and increase your insurance savings is to add exterior illumination, in the form of uplighting or motion sensing lights, to your home. A brightly-lit home is a safer home, and safety = savings when it comes to insurance.
  • Windows: The ideal window, from an insurer’s point of you is both double-paned and shatterproof. The first will help reduce your utility bills, by keeping cooled or air inside, where it should be, while the second will reduce the likelihood of a burglar, a storm, or a game of baseball shattering your glass. Impact-resistant doors may help reduce your premium, also.
  • Plumbing and Wiring: If you’ve lived in your home for more than ten years, consider updating your plumbing and wiring. Modernizing either one makes them more durable and safer, and may even mean you’re up to code (making it easier to sell your home down the road), when you might not have been before. You could save up to fifteen percent on your insurance bill by upgrading both systems, or between five and ten percent by only retro-fitting one.
  • Roof: Storms, hail, tree sap, and damage from birds and squirrels are just a few of the reasons you may want to consider replacing your roof. In some cases, your insurer won’t just reduce your premium, they’ll kick in a significant portion of the cost of the roof.

Other home improvements to consider are less structural in nature. For example, replacing your old dishwasher or refrigerator with newer, safer, Energy Star appliances could get you a small discount, as could replacing your old furniture with flame retardant models.

There are many ways improving your home can also improve your finances, but it’s important that you consult your insurance agent before proceeding with any renovations, just in case specific materials or documentation are required.

custom-home-theater-seating-cineloungers

So you built yourself a home theater with a large screen that can rival that of the local cinema. You have speakers, DVD players, receivers, and amplifiers. You even have a computerized system for playing all your DVDs. But after focusing on the electronics, you should think about the next important thing. Comfortable seats! You can opt for connected chairs, much like the ones in the cinemas or you can have individual seats. These chairs should be cushioned and cozy. Of course, they should also be easy to clean. You should not forget that soda spills and food crumbs are parts of a cinematic experience.
